The Bandung cycling scene

Bandung sits in a highland bowl around 768m, ringed by volcanic ridges that make it the de facto climbing capital of Indonesian road cycling — cooler and greener than sweltering Jakarta to the northwest. The scene skews hard toward road riding and climbing: weekend bunches roll out from Dago / Jalan Ir. H. Juanda and the Dayang Sumbi area around 6:30 AM, chasing the long drag up to Lembang before traffic and equatorial heat build. The signature efforts all head north and up — the Setiabudi/Dago Bengkok ascent to Lembang (roughly 650m of gain over ~19km), the brutally steep Punclut wall out of Ciumbuleuit, and the big day out to the Tangkuban Perahu volcano rim above 1,300m. There's also a strong off-road undercurrent in the surrounding forest and rice-field tracks, but it's the paved climbs that define the city's identity. Riding happens year-round thanks to the mild altitude, with the drier May-to-September window being the prime season for long mountain days.

Start here

The easiest on-ramp is Salasakahiji, the iconic Tuesday-morning Bandung-to-Lembang tradition since 2005 — show up with any bike, install Strava to connect, ride four consecutive Tuesdays, and you're invited into the WhatsApp group; follow @salasakahijibandung for timing. For shop culture and weekend bunch rides, Bikesystem on Jalan Ir. H. Juanda (Dago) doubles as a mechanic shop and community hangout, and the Strava Bandung club is the catch-all for anyone living and riding in the city. Most coordination happens through Strava and WhatsApp groups, with Instagram accounts like @bdg.cc used for ride photos and announcements.

Map ↗
12 mi2,140 ftPaved

The classic Bandung benchmark climb: a steady drag from the city up to the cool highland town of Lembang, gaining roughly 650m. The route via NHI Setiabudi past the Grand Hotel Lembang is a popular Strava segment, and the steeper variants via Dago Bengkok and Punclut are the area's toughest. Ridden at dawn to beat traffic and heat.

Punclut (Puncak Ciumbuleuit)

Ciumbuleuit
Map ↗
3.1 mi1,100 ftPaved

A short but savagely steep wall climbing out of the Ciumbuleuit area toward Lembang, lined with pine trees and opening onto panoramic views over the city. Roughly 5km of relentless pitch that has riders unable to hold the steepest ramps pushing their bikes — a favorite local pain test.
