The Bay Area cycling scene

If American road cycling has a center of gravity, this is it. Alto Velo and the South Bay clubs run the most consistent weekend ride cadence anywhere. North Bay has Marin County trails that birthed mountain biking. Year-round riding, stacked race calendar, more frame builders per square mile than any US region. Skylonda, the junction at Skyline Blvd and Highway 84 above Woodside, is the de facto Saturday meetup spot. Climb up Old La Honda, King's Mountain, or West Alpine and you'll end up there with half the peninsula at Alice's Restaurant.

Start here

Racing-curious? Look at Alto Velo or Olympic Club Cycling. Bikes-and-coffee culture? Any club run out of a Mission Bay or Palo Alto roastery. For a self-guided introduction: ride up Old La Honda, regroup at Skylonda, descend 84, you'll see more cyclists in two hours than most cities have in a year.

Old La Honda Road

Strava ↗
3.3 mi1,300 ft7.3% avgPaved

The Peninsula's benchmark climb and the de facto fitness test for Bay Area roadies: a steady, shaded grind through redwoods from Woodside up to Skyline. Low traffic and a remarkably consistent gradient; locals quote their "OLH time" the way runners quote a mile PR.

Hawk Hill

Marin Headlands, just over the Golden Gate Bridge
Strava ↗
2.5 mi780 ft5.5% avgPaved

The short, scenic climb just across the Golden Gate, up Conzelman Road into the Marin Headlands. Punchy rather than long, and it pays out the best skyline-and-bridge views of any climb in the Bay Area.
