The Chicago cycling scene

Chicago has one of America's deepest grassroots racing scenes; XXX Racing-Athletico, ABD Cycling Team, and the Chicago Cuttin' Crew run weekly crits, training races, and TT series spring through fall. The Lakefront Trail (18 miles of paved waterfront) is the everyday corridor north-south. Winter shuts road riding for ~4 months, but indoor crits, cyclocross, and the Major Taylor velodrome keep the scene year-round.

Start here

For racing-curious: ABD or XXX Tuesday/Thursday training rides. For social: the Lakefront Trail on a Saturday morning. Gravel? Head south toward the Driftless.

xXx Racing-Athletico

Chicago's development-focused amateur racing team, founded by bike messengers in 1999. Despite the racing focus, the on-ramp is the Saturday morning team ride: no-drop to a coffee shop in Highland Park, all abilities, running 20-plus years. Their LaBagh practice crits are a low-pressure way to learn pack riding.
