The London cycling scene

London's club cycling scene is enormous and tightly organised around two natural training grounds: the Outer Circle of Regent's Park in the north and the perimeter loop of Richmond Park in the south-west. Several 'super-clubs' each field hundreds of members, with structured pace groups, race teams, coaching, and near-daily rides. The classic weekend escape is south into the Surrey Hills - Box Hill's Zig Zag Road, made famous by the 2012 Olympic road race, sits about 25 miles from central London and is the benchmark climb for any London cyclist. The riding is overwhelmingly road, though gravel and off-road groups exist, and the lanes of Kent, Surrey, Hertfordshire and Essex carry the weekend traffic out of the city.

Start here

If you're north of the river, Islington Cycling Club and Cycle Club London run welcoming weekend rides with multiple pace groups; many are explicitly no-drop. South of the river, Dulwich Paragon meets at Herne Hill Velodrome and heads for the North Downs, while London Dynamo runs the most ride options of any London club out of Richmond Park. Most clubs now manage rides through the Spond app, where you'll find the exact start, ride leader and route.

Islington Cycling Club

A friendly and diverse North London road club founded in 2013, now over 900 members strong, with a primary road focus plus cyclocross, gravel and track riders. Saturday mornings are built around laps of Regent's Park's Outer Circle from the London Zoo entrance, split into a faster 7am training group and a more social 8am group, both finishing with a coffee. Sunday club rides head out from Highbury Fields in multiple groups of varying distance and speed, regrouping at hills and turn points, and the club runs twice-monthly intro and group-skills sessions for newcomers.

London Dynamo

One of the UK's largest and most successful cycling and racing clubs, London Dynamo is the dominant club on the south-west side, based around Richmond Park. It advertises more club rides, route variety and coaching than any other London club. Saturday mornings centre on park laps from Pen Ponds Cafe - a faster, drop 'Saturday Park Ride' of roughly 26 miles (four laps) and a no-drop 'Dynamellow' of around 19.5 miles (three laps). Sunday rides head out to Windsor and the Thames Valley from the Coppernose Cafe at Hampton Court with multiple pace groups including a marshalled non-drop option, and there are midweek hills rides plus a fast Wednesday-evening Richmond Park session.

Dulwich Paragon Cycling Club

A friendly south-east London club known for its dashing blue kit and a 'we ride fast and we ride slow, on road and off' ethos. The Saturday Club Run leaves Herne Hill Velodrome and runs a roughly 56km route up to the top of the North Downs and back, with groups ranging from pacy to steady. Sunday rides depart from Cadence at Crystal Palace on different and longer routes each week at faster, intermediate and steady paces, all regrouping where necessary to keep everyone together. The club also runs a fast 'Dawn Raid', a Wednesday-evening chaingang for race training, winter velodrome sessions including women-only groups, and off-road rides from Crystal Palace.

Cycle Club London (CCL)

A North London club built around explicitly no-drop rides - 'we won't leave anyone behind' - with a structured weekend programme out of East Finchley, Whetstone and Winchmore Hill into Hertfordshire, Essex and beyond. Saturdays offer an early ~60-mile 'Sparrows', a ~45-mile 13-15 mph 'Steady', and a ~60-mile 16-18 mph 'Faster' group; Sundays bring a ~60-mile 'Classic' plus an off-road option. Midweek the club runs Regent's Park sessions: race laps on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, and more relaxed one-hour 'chat laps' plus coffee on Wednesdays and Fridays. Rides are coordinated through the Spond app, which lists the precise start, ride leader and downloadable route.
