The Melbourne cycling scene

Melbourne runs on the morning bunch ride. Beach Road, the flat coastal strip from St Kilda down through Black Rock to Mordialloc, is the spiritual home of the scene: dozens of organised rides roll along it before dawn most days of the week, from gentle no-drop social bunches to the notorious 45km/h+ Hell Ride. Inland, the Dandenong Ranges give Melbourne its benchmark climbs, the gentle 1 in 20 and the steeper Wall, while the Yarra Boulevard in Kew is the city's go-to interval loop. The result is a road-heavy, training-oriented culture with an unusually deep weekday calendar.

Start here

If you want a soft entry, a no-drop social bunch is the move: Knights of Suburbia run an explicitly no-drop Friday westside ride, and St Kilda Cycling Club's She Rides On program is built specifically to bridge beginners into bunch riding. If you're confident and fast, the North Road Ride and Beach Road Ride are the classic weekday morning bunches. Avoid the Hell Ride until you really know what you're doing.

Hawthorn Cycling Club

A long-established inner-east racing and social club based around Hawthorn and Richmond, running a regular calendar of bunch rides for a range of levels alongside its racing program. The 'Town Haul' ride rolls out to Beach Road, sprints the Black Rock to Mordialloc stretch and regroups before heading back to Richmond, while other rides like 'Banana Bread' wander the inner-north bike paths and 'Northern Hills' head for the climbs around Kinglake. The club also runs a no-drop, social-paced monthly women's ride.

St Kilda Cycling Club (She Rides On)

St Kilda Cycling Club (SKCC) is one of Melbourne's major bayside clubs, running a full weekly ride calendar plus the AusCycling-supported 'She Rides On' women's program. She Rides On is built to bridge the gap between learn-to-ride beginners and full club bunches: ride leaders coach bunch etiquette and confidence at an easy, relaxed pace, with no one left behind. The introductory Monday ride runs Elwood to Black Rock and back at 25-28km/h, and a Tuesday session does laps of the Yarra Boulevard in Kew.

Knights of Suburbia

A Melbourne cycling community and amateur outfit known for its inclusive, social bunch rides. All of their bunch rides are billed as 'No Drop, Coffee Stop, Social Rolls' unless otherwise noted, and new riders are always welcome. Their flagship Melbourne Westside Social ride meets every Friday morning at Yarraville Station for an easy ~26km roll, making it one of the more approachable regular bunches in the inner west.
