The Mumbai cycling scene

Mumbai's cycling scene runs on early starts: by 5-7 AM, before the heat and chaos, riders take over Marine Drive, Carter Road, and the coastal stretch out to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The community is large and overwhelmingly social-media-organized, with the Mumbai Cycling Enthusiast (MCE) network claiming tens of thousands of members across Facebook and Strava. Bandra and Khar are the de facto hub, but groups cluster in Juhu, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Borivali too. The city's wild card is Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivali, a 100+ sq km protected forest inside the metropolis where private cars are barred and the road to Kanheri Caves becomes a rare car-free climb. Off-road riders head to Aarey Colony's mixed trails and the climbs around Yeoor and Kharghar.

Start here

The easiest on-ramp is a free community group ride. The Mumbai Cycling Enthusiast (MCE) Strava and Facebook network is the largest gateway, and Bandra's Carter Road Cyclists or Juhu's Pedal Bunnies run frequent dawn rides along the coast. On Sunday mornings the dedicated NCPA-to-Sea Link cycle track opens to riders. Pick a group near your neighborhood, confirm the meet on their Facebook or WhatsApp before showing up, and bring a helmet (most groups require one).

Mumbai Cycling Enthusiast (MCE)

MCE is Mumbai's largest cycling community, describing itself as one of the biggest cycling groups in the world with 26,000+ members across its Facebook group and a dedicated Strava club used to share rides and events. Rather than a single fixed weekly ride, it functions as an umbrella network that surfaces women's weekend tours, long rides to places like Shahapur, overlanding trips, and cyclothons, and connects newer riders to smaller neighborhood groups across the city. Helmets are mandatory on its rides.
