The Paris cycling scene

Paris itself is flat and increasingly bike-friendly, with the post-2020 build-out of protected lanes ('coronapistes' made permanent) making it one of Europe's fastest-improving big cities for everyday riding. The road scene lives at the edges: weekend groups roll out to the Vallée de Chevreuse southwest of the city, the forests of Rambouillet and Fontainebleau, and the climbs around the Chevreuse and Yvelines. The city is also the historic heart of randonneuring: the Audax Club Parisien, founded in 1904, organizes Paris-Brest-Paris. An international, English-speaking expat scene rides alongside the large French club culture.

Start here

For an English-speaking, no-drop introduction, the Paris Cycling B-Group runs friendly weekend rides out of the city. Montmartre Vélo Club's Saturday departures from the foot of the Sacré-Cœur are the big local social ride, and Le Peloton Café in the Marais is the community café hub.

Paris Cycling B-Group

A very informal, international road group formed in 2017, with riders from dozens of countries united by a love of cycling and 'passable English language skills.' Rides are explicitly no-drop, regrouping at key turns and the tops of climbs so nobody is left behind, and the focus is on enjoying the countryside and socializing rather than racing. Weekend rides typically run 80-100 km (occasionally up to 150 km) at a sociable pace, with a slower gruppetto group around 20 km/h and a faster peloton around 25 km/h. Membership and rides are free; helmets are required and you RSVP through the Meetup group.

Montmartre Vélo Club

Founded in 2020 at the foot of the Sacré-Cœur, MVC has grown into one of Paris's largest and most visible road clubs, with a strong spirit of camaraderie ('bon esprit, camaraderie, crevaisons & pauses café'). It runs a long road ride every Saturday of the year, with seasonal departures between roughly 7am and 9am for routes of 70-150 km, followed by a coffee-and-croissant stop. Riding is based in Montmartre and out across Île-de-France.

Audax Club Parisien

The historic home of long-distance cycling, founded in 1904. The ACP organizes randonneuring and audax endurance events, most famously Paris-Brest-Paris Randonneur, a 1,200 km ride first run in 1931 and held every four years. It also runs a season of BRM brevets (200/300/400/600 km) and the popular '200 km de Paname' out of the Paris region. This is a destination for self-sufficient, distance-focused riders rather than a casual weekly social club.

Paname Gravel Ride

Billed as the first community gravel ride of Île-de-France, Paname Gravel Ride runs weekly midweek outings exploring the gravel trails of the Paris region, with the social dimension explicitly prioritized over performance. Many rides start from and end at train stations (e.g. Gare de l'Est, Gare de Lyon) using the regional rail network to reach the countryside, and the club shares its route GPX traces for free. It's open to riders of all levels.
