The Rome cycling scene

Rome's cycling scene is split between a chaotic, traffic-heavy historic core and the genuinely excellent riding that begins at the city's edges. The cobbled basalt of the ancient Via Appia Antica is the city's signature spin, while the Lungotevere paths trace the Tiber for roughly 15 km from Ponte Milvio to Ponte Sublicio. For road cyclists the real terrain is the Castelli Romani hills southeast of the city (climbs to Frascati, Nemi and Rocca di Papa) and the rolling roads out toward Lake Bracciano. Bike infrastructure has historically lagged, but the city is building the GRAB, a roughly 45-53 km ring path linking the Colosseum, Appia Antica, Villa Borghese and the Tiber, aimed at completion in 2026.

Start here

FIAB-affiliated associations like Ruotalibera (founded 1987) and BiciLiberaTutti run guided urban and out-of-town excursions and are the most newcomer-friendly entry point. Gruppo MTB Pedalando ASD organizes regular road (bici da corsa) and mountain-bike outings into the Lazio hills. For gear and a sense of the local culture, the century-old Cicli Lazzaretti on Via Bergamo is a Roman institution. Many road groups in Rome are informal and coordinate via Facebook, WhatsApp and Strava rather than fixed published calendars, so plan to message ahead.

FIAB Roma Ruotalibera

Founded in 1987, Ruotalibera is Rome's long-running FIAB-affiliated cycling and environmental association, part of the national Italian Federation for Environment and Bicycle (FIAB). It promotes everyday bicycle use and runs a calendar of guided urban and out-of-town excursions, cultural rides and advocacy initiatives like 'Appia in bici' on the Via Appia Antica. The focus is touring and leisure rather than fast training, which makes it accessible to riders new to the city.

FIAB Roma BiciLiberaTutti

A FIAB-affiliated cycling and sustainable-mobility association established in 2018, BiciLiberaTutti organizes safe-route urban rides, day excursions around Rome (toward Bracciano, the Monte Velino area and beyond) and multi-day cicloviaggi to destinations like Sardinia and Abruzzo. It is explicitly non-commercial ('not a travel agency'), aiming to pair low cost with welcoming, all-levels touring.

Salvaiciclisti Roma

Rome's best-known urban-cycling advocacy association, which grew out of the city's Critical Mass scene and the 2012 #Salvaiciclisti movement and formalized as an association that October. Less a group-ride club than a cycling-rights organization, it campaigns for safer streets and protected infrastructure and helps organize family-oriented events such as Kidical Mass alongside other Roman cycling groups. A useful first contact for understanding the local riding and advocacy community.
