The Shenzhen cycling scene

Shenzhen is a young, fast-growing megacity in Guangdong, just across the border from Hong Kong, and its cycling scene reflects that energy. The city has built out an extensive network of recreational greenways and coastal paths, headlined by a 50 km western coastal cycling route completed at the end of 2024 that links Bao'an's Xiwan Mangrove Park through Qianhai Bay and Shenzhen Bay Park to the Shenzhen River Greenway in Futian, part of a planned 200 km east-west coastal corridor. Car-free stretches at Shenzhen Bay Park draw large recreational riding groups, especially on weekday mornings before the paths fill up. The flat coastal greenways are the heart of the everyday scene; serious climbing exists at the city's green edges (Wutong Mountain, Yantian's mid-hill greenway), though some mountain roads such as Wutong Shan are now closed to bikes.

Start here

For a first ride, the Shenzhen Bay Park to coastal greenway corridor is the obvious entry point: flat, scenic, mostly car-free, and beginner-friendly. International riders tend to organize through social channels rather than fixed-schedule clubs; the ShenzhenCycling community (Facebook/Instagram) and the women's SWIC Pelotonnette group are the most visible English-friendly threads, while local riders coordinate heavily over WeChat and track segments on Strava (e.g. the BeeBike club). Decathlon and a Trek store cover gear and basics.

SWIC Pelotonnette

The Pelotonnette is the cycling group of the Shenzhen Women's International Club (SWIC), an expat women's organization that runs member-driven activities across the city. Profiled in Shenzhen Daily, the group designed its own custom jerseys featuring a spoonbill inspired by a statue along its regular route. It is a social, women's-only riding group within the broader SWIC community.
