The Taipei cycling scene

Taipei is the heart of Taiwan's 'Bicycle Kingdom' — home to Giant and Merida — and it shows in the riding. The city is wrapped by an extensive riverside bikeway network (well over 100 km along the Tamsui, Xindian, Jingmei and Keelung rivers) that lets you ride traffic-free for hours, and bikes are allowed on the MRT. The signature draw is Yangmingshan National Park: from Taipei Main Station it is only about 19 km to the famous Feng Gui Zui (FGZ) climb, making this one of the few capital cities where a serious mountain climb is a short spin from downtown. The road scene runs from casual social groups to KOM-chasing climbers, with humid subtropical summers and mild, rideable winters.

Start here

The classic roll-up point is the 7-Eleven across from the National Palace Museum on Zhishan Road; show up with a road bike on a weekend morning (roughly 6-8 AM) and you can tag onto a group heading for the hills. For a structured, English-friendly entry, the Taipei Slow Cyclists are a social, international club, and the Yangmingshan Cycling Club mixes expats and locals via its Facebook group. MathewBike near the riverside path is a good rental and info stop for visitors.

Taipei Slow Cyclists (TSC)

Founded in 2019, the Taipei Slow Cyclists are a very international group of casual road cyclists who put the social side of riding first. Membership ranges from beginners to long-time passionate riders, and the group is one of the most popular options for non-Mandarin speakers in Taipei. The emphasis is on shared, welcoming rides rather than racing.

Yangmingshan Cycling Club

A mixed group of expat and local riders, both recreational and competitive, organized around the climbs of Yangmingshan National Park just north of the city. The club is widely described as a welcoming bunch and coordinates primarily through its Facebook group and Strava club. It is a natural home for riders who want to tackle Feng Gui Zui, Datun and the coastal loops.
