The Tokyo cycling scene

Tokyo's road scene is built around its rivers and its western mountains. The Tama River (Tamagawa) and Arakawa cycling roads give riders long, flat, traffic-free escapes from the densest city on earth, and they double as the staging grounds for nearly every group ride. Head west and the terrain flips: the foothills around Mt. Takao, Hachioji and Okutama deliver real climbs — Wada Pass and Otarumi Pass are the local proving grounds. The English-speaking foreign cycling community is unusually well organized for a non-Western city, anchored by long-running clubs that welcome visitors and newcomers.

Start here

For an English speaker new to town, the Tokyo Cycling Club (TCC) forum at tokyocycle.com is the easiest front door: post an intro and find rides at a range of paces across West Tokyo, Chiba and Saitama. If you'd rather take it easy, Half Fast Cycling runs no-drop, no-fee social weekend rides that link rivers and parks. Spin out along the Tama or Arakawa cycling road to find your legs, then graduate to the Mt. Takao climbs when you're ready.

The savage local climb. Reached from the Mt. Takao area, Wada Pass tops out around 690m and includes sustained stretches at 10-15% grade. The last ~3.8km from the bus stop to the top is the measured time-trial section that local riders use to test themselves.

Tokyo Cycling Club (TCC)

Tokyo Cycling Club is a long-running, loosely organized English-language club — really a very active online community and bulletin board where riders of all levels coordinate rides. It spans everything from a core of very strong riders to groups happy to roll at a leisurely pace, with rides launching all over the region: West Tokyo, the Tama hills, Chiba and Saitama. For an English-speaking foreign visitor or new resident, the TCC forum is widely cited as one of the easiest places to find a group ride and get advice.

Half Fast Cycling

Half Fast Cycling is an international group riding mostly in and around Tokyo, linking rivers, parks and bike paths 'to maximize greenery and minimize contact with taxi doors.' The emphasis is firmly social and no-drop — shorter urban weekend rides that often finish with food and drink, and an ethos that no one gets left behind. Rides are loosely sorted by speed, and there is no membership fee, which makes it one of the most approachable entry points for newcomers and casual riders.
