The Utrecht cycling scene

Utrecht is consistently ranked among the world's best cycling cities, with dense, protected infrastructure and the world's largest bike parking garage at Utrecht Centraal. Everyday cycling is universal, but there's also a genuine sport-cycling scene: a cluster of road clubs (CS030, De Volharding, Het Stadion, cTc), early-morning fast groups, and an international/expat pickup-ride culture that has run since 2020. Terrain is famously flat in and around the city, so most road riders head east to the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, the wooded glacial ridge that holds the closest thing the central Netherlands has to climbs.

Start here

For a relaxed, English-friendly start, the Monday-evening 'Get On Your Bike!' group from Café Klein Berlijn (run via Fietsclub Ledig Erf) welcomes novices with a no-drop, leave-together-finish-together format. For the international scene, Utrecht's Cycling Internationals (Strava 'Cycling Utrecht') coordinate pickup rides via WhatsApp. Faster riders gather Friday at dawn with NoBreakfast at Ledig Erf.
